URBAN THEATER

In the process of China's urbanization, it is quite common that many new buildings are isolated with city, especially in historical district. How to redefine the relationships between new buildings and city? This is the primary consideration of the design.

In this competition, participants were required to design a multi-function urban complex in a historical district in Nanjing. The volume is huge. So the building should follow the controlling plan of city space in the first place; but at the same time, because of the large volume, the building is inevitable to stand out from urban fabric. We believe that when the old meets the new, tremendous energy would be generated so the main aim of our work is to release such energy for prosperity of the area. So rather than simply following the design requirements, we introduced a new concept: “city as a theater”.

For the complexity of exact context and the project itself, we studied from the very beginning. Our works included five steps: 1) urban context analysis; 2) volume adjustment, 3) specific area design; 4) realization of the "theater", 5)modeling.
